Three Questions to Ask When Buying Industrial Castors

Blog

Castor wheels are very useful for moving heavy materials and equipment around a workplace, such as a warehouse or a factory. Although they can make life much easier and safer for your employees, you will need to make sure you are buying the right wheels for your purposes. Here are some things you will need to consider.

Will the floor be wet?

One thing you will need to consider is whether or not you will be working outside in wet conditions. Ordinary rubber castor wheels will not be good enough to work on such a surface. Instead, you will need to use stainless steel castor wheels, which are much easier to steer and will be able to withstand wet conditions. This is also a consideration if you work inside in cool rooms or food stores where the floor can be wet from condensation or melted ice. Surfaces that are liable to freeze will also require stainless steel castors.

Fixed wheels or swivel wheels?

Castor wheels come in two types of frames. Swivel castors allow the wheels to rotate in a full circle, while fixed castors only move forwards and backwards. Both types have their own advantages. Swivel wheels are much better for steering and manoeuvring and will be more suitable if you are working in small spaces with tight corners. Fixed wheels, on the other hand, can take a heavier load and may be a better choice if the flexibility of steering is not such an important consideration, or if deviating from a straight line would be disadvantageous or even dangerous.

How big of a load will you be moving?

This is perhaps the most important consideration. If you are only transporting light loads, an ordinary rubber castor wheel might be all you need. This type of wheel is perfect for general use. For heavier loads, you may be better off with urethane castor wheels. These are ideal for industrial use, but they should not be difficult to manoeuvre. Finally, pneumatic castors are available, which will be suitable for heavy-duty outdoor use, for example on sports fields or agricultural environments. They are available with foam fillings that will stop them from being punctured or going flat.

The right type of castor will help you to move your equipment safely and conveniently. If you are still unsure, just talk to your supplier who will be happy to help you choose the right type for your needs. Contact an industrial castors service near you to learn more.
